Apart from his prodigious output of comics, Oesterheld was also a prose author. Throughout the years, he wrote numerous science fiction stories. Most of them, however, remained either unpublished or long forgotten - until now.
Mariano Chinelli and Martín Hadis undertook a meticulous research and restoration project. By searching through Oesterheld's personal papers, and scouring classic sci-fi magazines from his time they succeeded in recovering this secret facet of Oesterheld´s work and assembling this anthology. They thus fulfilled one of Oesterheld´s longest-held wishes that never came to fruition due the forced disappearance of this remarkable writer by the military junta that devastated Argentina until the early 1980s.
"Gelo" is the name of a celestial object that appears throughout several of these stories - sometimes as a planet, others as a star and some others as mythical world. Through its recurring presence in his texts, it implicitly weaves Oesterheld´s stories together.
And this is remarkable because, drawing on Oesterheld's own words, this book spans a very wide thematic range within science fiction: from the philosophical lyricism of "The God-seller" to the absurd wit of "Innocent Maquiavelo" from the deep humanity of "Two deaths" to the adventures of "Space Pariah" and the high suspense of "Paradise" Not one of these stories is included for its own sake. All of them carry an allegorical undercurrent, all of them are trying to convey something, in a human and distinctly "Argentine" way — in a manner that is neither Bradbury's, nor Arthur Clarke's, nor Calvino's, nor any other great writer's. Rather, according to Oesterheld, they try to portray universal dreams and fears while remaining "simply ours: Argentine."
