Borges's final enigma was carved in stone: the strange figures and inscriptions in ancient languages carved on his tombstone, which stands in the Plainpalais Cemetery in Geneva. The origin and meaning of this last legacy of the great Argentine writer had until now remained uknown. What remote centuries do these figures come from? In what way do they allude to Borges's work? What do the phrases that accompany them mean?
This book answers these questions for the first time through a journey across medieval chronicles, ancient mythologies, and medieval literatures from the Norse and Anglo-Saxon past. The revelations that emerge from this journey shed new light on Borges's works and serve at the same time as an excellent introduction to his literary universe.
